Top 5 Solo Board Games
For this list i am including both multiplayer games that have a solo mode and solo only games but i am not including games that don’t have an official solo mode built in.
5. Sentinels of the multiverse
In sentinels of the multiverse you will battle against a boss and try and get their life total down to 0 (some of the bosses do have alternate win conditions)you will do this by picking 2-4 heroes. You start with a hand of cards that depends on what hero you play as and on your turn you play one card from your hand onto the table and draw one card from your prebuilt deck.
I got this game recently and I absolutely fell in love, its cast of heroes feel just as real as any superhero from a comic book series by marvel or dc. They can create such a real feeling cast by adding incredible flavour text throughout the rule book and cards which involve all the characters interacting with each other and also shows their interactions with the enemy’s. I find my self picking this game up weekly for a quick play through. I know this is a solo list but i feel that it is necessary for me to mention how incredible the multiplayer is, I played this game for the first time with my dad who plays very few board games and he caught on instantly and proceeded to have a great time.
The game has managed to create an incredible combo system where all the characters can bounce off each their for crazy turns that feel unreal. The individual characters also feel very unique and play very differently from one another which enhances the thematic feeling of the game. The villains also have a great ai system that flows quite nicely and doesn’t require much management from the players side.
After a while of playing the game the combos started to feel very repetitive and they started to become quite stale which made the game feel quite boring and monotonous you can counter this by buying expansions but that is only a temporary fix to this issue but it took me hundreds of play through to reach this point so i still highly recommend this game to anyone out there
4. Sleeping gods
In sleeping gods you play as the crew of a ship that has gotten itself stuck in a mythical land and you are trying to escape by waking up the gods. You will traverse the open world encounter friends and foes along your adventure to wake the gods and escape back to home.
Wow sleeping gods is just incredible i first picked it up about 2 years ago over the summer and i had no one to play it with so i ended up playing solo. My first play through of this game has to be one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life, i basically locked myself in a room for 3 months and played this game for multiple hours a day. The story is so immersive and engaging, the gameplay also is very well polished so the game doesn’t feel like it is completely relying on narrative. I have found that I don’t really play the game at all since i have beaten it, i have heard other people say that it is extremely re playable but I haven't felt that way at all so if you are looking for a game to play a couple times or to keep you engaged for years this isn’t the game for you.
The game does lack in the combat system which felt way too easy and straight forward.
Because of the open world nature of the game the story sometimes feels a it disconnected and random but I don’t see a work around to that problem given the game.
3. Marvel champions the lcg
In marvel champions you will play as a hero from the expansive cast of marvel characters and battle against a villain. On your turn you draw a hand of cards and to play those cards you need to pay their cost the currency that is used to pay for those cards are the cards in your hand so if i wanted to play a card that cost 2 i would have to get rid of two cards in my hand. On the villains turn they will try to increase there scheme (which is one of the ways they win) and attack you, after that the villain will play a card from their deck which will have some sort of negative effect.the game ends when you reduce the villains health down to 0 or when the villain completes their scheme or reduces your health to 0.
I got this game in 2019 when it came out i was begging my mom for it and she said I couldn’t get it so i started doing anything possible to earn a quick buck eventually I finally got enough money to buy the core set, I cannot explain the joy I experienced when i arrived home that day. I full sprinted to the dining room table and tore open the box to start playing over the next few days i would get back from school and just play marvel champions for a couple hours i have so many memories of dying to Valtron or drawing shadows of the past from the villain deck and rage quitting the game. As I’ve gotten older i have slowed down on this game and play less frequently only taking it out every 2 or so months for a quick game.
Mechanically this game is incredible every turn is a little puzzle deciding what cards to play and what cards to give up. By far the best part of this game are the campaign expansions my best memory from playing this game is beating one of these campaigns. This leads me into my biggest issue with this game and games like it, they bait you into buying dozens of expansions for a good 2 years all my money got drained into buying expansions for this game half of them i still haven’t played to this day so be careful before investing in this game.
2. Astro knights eternity
Astor knight eternity like so many of my previous games on this list is another card based boss battler but unlike all of the previous games it is a deck builder. This game is a re implementation of the system used in aeons end you will collect resources to buy more cards which you can use to deal damage to the villain you are playing against.
I got this game about a month ago and I have had an incredible time i have not finished the campaign yet but what i have worked through so far has been really incredible and the story is engaging and it has some of the best deck building i have ever seen in a game.
The star of this game is the game play, wow it is incredible the way the card system works adds so much depth and difficulty to the game and the cast of characters who are all super unique and interesting adds an extra element of depth and strategy. The game forces you to think. On your feet with the turn order being randomised so you can’t see out your game to far into the future but if you don’t look ahead and start strategising you are bound to fail so you have to figure out what you can predict and do now and what you have no control over which can be harder than you think. I love this game and it has been my far my favourite game released in the last 2 years
1. Arkham horror the lcg
Arkham horror is a story driven living card game set in the lovecraftian town of Arkham Massachusetts. In this game you will play as an investigator trying to uncover the secrets of your location you will do this by exploring the map (the map is made by organising a specific set of cards location cards across your table) on your turn you will move, explore, investigate and play cards from your hand by paying its resource cost. You will build a deck for that character before the game starts so it is a little bit difficult to get into if you have never played the game before. I suggest that for your first play through you go online and find a prebuilt deck that you can make with the cards you have.
This game is awesome I got it about 2 years ago and i have played through 4 of the mainline campaigns at this point and each and every single one has been a peek gaming experience there is no better feeling than finishing that Arkham horror campaign that you started 2 months ago. The story for each campaign is super immersive, in fact id go as far as to say they it is the most immersive board game i have ever played in my whole life. The designer of the game also made no sacrifices with the gameplay or the story because they are both super engaging and deep, i would buy this game if it had an horrendous story but it kept the same gameplay and this works the other way around to i would buy the game if it had very few mechanics that were badly polished and didn’t fit well into the game but it kept the incredible story. That is how good the game is they have managed to nail both areas so well and they fit together so seamlessly. The only downside to this game is the same downside as marvel champions it encourages you to buy expansions but if you are ok with constant updates and expansions this is 100 percent a must buy for any gamer.
