A brief gameplay overview
In marvel champions you will play as one of the hero’s from the massive cast of characters in the marvel universe and it is frankly insane how many different characters they have put into this game and how they all feel true to the original characters from the comic book. On your turn you will draw a hand of cards then you can do a couple of things play cards from your hand, use actions on your hero card and other cards you have already played or initiate basic power on your hero. You can do these action in any order. To play cards from your hand you will have to pay their resource cost you pay that cost by discarding other cards from your hand for their resource. Some of the cards you play will stay in play and then you can use those cards later on in the game for their ability. Your hero has 3 different abilities attack (how you deal damage to the enemy), thwart (how you stop them from scheming) and the you can defend (block damage dealt by the villain). On the villain turn they take three actions placing threat on a scheme , attacking and then playing a card. When the villain places threat on a scheme they will advance the main scheme and if this scheme reaches its threat threshold the players can lose the game. The next action the villain will do is attacking when the villain attacks they will deal damage to you equal to their attack value. The last action the villain will do in a turn is play a card the cards the villains play can have various affects for example adding different enemy’s to the game causing the villain to attack again or placing in an upgrade that will make the villain harder to defeat. You win the game by decreasing the villains health down to zero, the villain wins if they complete all their main schemes or if they can deplete all the hero’s health down to zero.
Replay ability
This game is incredibly replay able it is by far the most played game in my collection at this point i have played the game over 300 times and even though i play it in less volume now than i did back when i first got but i have never not enjoyed a play through of this game. The reason this game is so replay able is because of its lcg (living card game) format. For those who don’t know the lcg format is an alternative to the trading card game format where instead of buying booster packs where you have no idea what you are getting and cards that are super rare and sought after, you will get a pack or expansion with a set of cards that are public knowledge which means that you can see what is inside the pack and their is no guessing on whether or not you draw the card you need and the lcg format also has no rarity system. This format of card games was originally created by the board game company fantasy flight after the massive success of their first lcg anachronism they decided to copy right the term so now all lcgs are made by fantasy flight.
The reason this type of card game make marvel champions so replay able is because the developers don’t need to worry about the issues of a tcg like not having the correct cards for a new mechanic or not having enough cards to play a certain game mode, since they have control over all the cards you get they have a lot more freedom as developers which leads to much deeper gameplay and mechanics.
Theme / story
As you can probably tell from the title of the game it’s based on the marvel universe so it has all the characters and villains this means that a lot of the story telling in this game is based on the vents that happened in the comic books, but if you really want to experience any theme or story you are going to have to buy one of the big box expansions because those will provide you with a 5 scenario long campaign that has its own story and characters. My favourite gaming experience ever might be when i played the mad titans shadow ( the mad titans shadow is one of the big box campaigns ), I wont go into too much detail but I will say that if you want the best marvel champions experience then play the mad titans shadow. Unfortunately if you choose not to get any of the big box expansions you are going to struggle with. The story elements in the game because there basically aren’t any other than for some flavour text. So if you are looking for a really thematic story narrative rich game then instead by the other lcg by fantasy flight called Arkham horror the card game.
Is marvel champions good
Marvel champions was a game i got when i was still just a teenager in 2020 and I had zero money because my parents never gave me an allowance and i had been in hospital for most of that year so i had not been able to do anything. For a big chunk of that time i was in hospital i had been watching a YouTube channel called all you can board and i discovered their marvel champions videos. I fell in love with the game before i even played it at that time i was also a massive marvel fan so to see my favourite hobby combine with my favourite comic book world was a dream come true. After i got better towards the end of 2020 i managed to get my hands on a copy i ran home and tore the game open and started learning how to play which ended up being way more difficult than i expected so I couldn’t even play the game on the first day i got it. The following day i had a long day at school because of sport so to make sure that i could fit in a game i woke up at 5:00am. I played that game for 2 hours straight breaking through the first two scenarios rhino and klaw and then getting obliterated over and over by ultron. When my dad came to knock on my saying that it was time to leave was probably the worst moment of that day. So yes if you are wondering the is game is good in fact it is not just good it is a master piece.
Should you buy marvel champions
The answer to the question on whether or not you would want you buy marvel champions is yes 100%, this game is incredible and is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. For anyone looking for a superhero themed game this is my number 1 recommendation. The only issue you will run into playing this game is the way fantasy flight releases expansions. They release them so frequently and they add so much new content to the point where you feel like you have to buy the most recent expansion pack or campaign box so if you don’t like that this is not the game for you.
