Top 10 board games of all time

Top 10 board games of all time

1. Arkham horror the cad game

Why is this my number one? I know this is crazy but when I first got this game I didn’t like it at all I thought that it was way too hard and I didn’t like that if you failed a scenario you don’t get to retry it. It took me a very long time to realise that that was the whole point of the game it wasn’t supposed to go well  and you weren’t meant to win every time you were meant to experience the story that you created through failing scenarios and refusing to help characters. Once I got that into my head I started to enjoy the game so much more, I no longer felt sad about a failed scenario instead I was exited to sea how not doing well would change the game.

This game is 100% my favourite game of all time I never see this game falling from my top 10 list this is a timeless classic that each and every tabletop gamer should experience.

2. The adventures of Marco Polo

This was the first heavyish euro game I ever played. I got this game late 2020 and I had only been in the hobby for a little bit by then and I had very little experience with board games. This game opened my mind to what a board game could be before this I had only played games like Catan and Takenoko which are relatively easy and uncomplicated games compared to this. I had no idea that a game could have this level of complexity, in hindsight the game is not that complicated but compared to all the games that I had played before this game was worlds ahead in complexity and depth. I constantly play this game even to this day and it is so much fun every I get it to the table.

3. Tzolkin the Mayan calendar

This game is incredible and underrated. Tzolkin has the most interesting work placement mechanic I have ever seen in a game, basically there is a massive cog in the middle of the board with smaller cogs coming off of it and at the end of every round you turn the massive cog in the middle which of course turns all the cogs next to it. On your turn you can place a worker on the lowest spot on one of the smaller cogs. The lowest spot on a cog gives the worst rewards so as the cog rotates the spot you were on becomes better and better, but unlike other worker placement games you don’t gain the resources when you place your worker instead you gain the resources when you remove your worker from the board so the longer you leave your worker on a spot the better the reward will be. This interesting worker placement mechanics along with some really refined gameplay makes this game an absolute master piece.

4. Sleeping gods

Sleeping gods is a gem of a game. This games story telling and open world mechanic is so incredible that once you start playing it is near impossible to put down. I have found myself playing this game for 5-6 hours straight and not even noticing. The selling point of this game is the fact that it is open world. I never in my life thought that it would be possible to implement an open world into a board game as well as they have done it in sleeping gods the travelling or traversal mechanics are so well thought out and the exploration is incredible I strongly recommend this game to every body.

5. Scythe

Scythe has a lot of things going for it. It has very strong mechanics awesome game components and a great table presence but it was not what I was expecting. When I first got this game I thought that it was going to be a game where you are trying to kill all your other player troops and has loads of shooting and awesome combat but instead i got a much more strategic euro game. Obviously the fact that it was a euro was not a bad thing since it is my number 5 of all time but it is important to be aware that you wont be getting a a hack and slash war game. This game is also super complex and has a lot of depth and strategy which in my opinion makes the game even better. I adore scythe but it is not for everyone.

6. Lost ruins of a rank

I could talk about this game for hours but I will keep it short for this post. This game has achieved something I barely ever see in euro games and that is the fact that the game has a really good theme and atmosphere. To go along with the theme and atmosphere it has really intuitive and addictive gameplay and is a masterclass for any game designers because it keeps all of its systems and mechanics very bare bones and simple proving that game don’t always need crazy complexity and thousands of little rules and intricacies to be good. I have played this game with every one in my family and all of them have enjoyed it. There is a reason lost ruins of arnak is so popular, if you have never played this game you are missing out.

7.  Brass Birmingham

When I was first getting into the hobby I was super scared to play brass Birmingham I thought that it was going to be insanely difficult and would take me hours to learn all the rules, the reason I thought that that would be the case was because of the way people talk about the game. Everyone talks about how heavy and difficult this game is and they are right. The heaviness and the difficulty of this game don’t come from the rules it comes from the strategic depth. I got this game expecting to only play it a couple of times once with my family and never play it again because they found it to difficult but instead they got into the game straight away and constantly ask me to take it off the shelf and play the game. So for anyone worried about the game being to difficult to get into don’t worry this game is fantastic and worth all the effort.

8. Everdell

Everdell was another game that I got early on when I started to get into the hobby. I had seen this game all over the place it felt like all the YouTubers I watched were talking about it so I caved and bought the game. This game is exactly what it says it is. Everdell is a cozy worker placement game that has a lot of really nice artwork, charm and components. I have loved this game ever since my first play through, all the mechanics and artwork comes together seamlessy to make a game that when you are playing you never want to finish. Each tableau that you build feels like its own little universe. This game has unfortunately fallen off a bit for me over the last couple years but it is still incredible.

9. Marvel champions the card game

I stumbled upon this game due to a YouTube channel called all you can board. I hadn’t seen this game anywhere else at that point. For a good couple weeks I would watch the all you can board pack review every evening I hadn’t even seen someone play the game at this point. Eventually I decided that I had to pick this game up so I ordered it at my local game store. After the game arrived and I had finally gotten home I sprinted to my desk to start playing just to be disappointed I did not like the game but I had spent my money on it and had hyped it up so much, so I played it a couple more times and each time I played the game grew on me. It reached a point where I would get back from school and just play marvel champions. Everything about this game feels so refined and so clean, unfortunately the amount of expansions that kept on getting released and the fact that you get pressured into buying by the online culture related to the game eventually led to me falling out a bit with marvel champions but it is still incredible.

10. Astro knight eternity

I got Astro knight very recently and I expected to thoroughly enjoy it and as you can tell I did. One thing I did not expect was the story and the theming of this game to come through so well, I expected there to be a good story but I didn’t expect it to be this good. I was expecting strong deck building and card play  which they followed through on but like I have already said the story was a complete surprise. I have absolutely no idea how they have integrated the theme and story into the gameplay so well. I would put this game higher on my list but I don’t feel like I have had enough time with it yet.

top 5 best solo board games

Top 5 Solo Board Games For this list I am including both multiplayer games that have a solo mode and solo only games but I am not including games that don’t have an official solo mode built in. 5. Sentinels of the multiverse In sentinels of the multiverse you will battle against a boss and try and get their life total down to 0 (some of the bosses do have alternate win conditions) you will do this by picking 2-4 heroes. You start with a hand of cards that depends on what hero you play as and on your turn you play one card from your hand onto the table and draw one card from your prebuilt deck. I got this game recently and I absolutely fell in love, its cast of heroes feel just as real as any superhero from a comic book series by marvel or dc. They can create such a real feeling cast by adding incredible flavour text throughout the rule book and cards which involve all the characters interacting with each other and also shows their interactions with the enemy’s. I find my self picking t...
