A brief gameplay overview
In lords of water deep you are trying to score more victory points than your opponent you do this by completing quests. Each quest requires a certain set of resources. You collect these resources by placing your workers on locations in the city of water deep. Where you place your workers you will block your opponents from using that location. Some locations on the board will give the player intrigue cards which allow the players to take actions that will have a direct effect on the opponents, for example you could get a card that allows you to take one resource of any type from your opponents.
Replay ability
Lords of water deep has a surprising amount of depth compared to other worker placement games this makes the game very replay able and interesting even after a long time of playing the game. The game also has multiple expansions which are super worth it and add a lot of content to the base game. The games mechanics are very very simple so for players out there who enjoy a game that has a lot of mechanical depth and replay ability then this game is probably not right for you since a lot of the tensions and replay ability of this game comes from the dynamics with the other players. The most enjoyable bit that contributes the most to the replay ability was definitely player interaction as the game goes on you and the other players will form unofficial alliances to try and take down the person in the lead but you are also worried that you are leaving your self exposed to the player you are working with, so there is this constant tension while you play. A lot of this player interactions is driven by the intrigue cards. Intrigue cards force direct interaction between players some cards can seriously mess with your opponents for example you can get an intrigue card that is a mandatory quest which forces the player to complete it before they can complete any of the quests they already have.
Theme / story
Given that the game is based on dungeons and dragons and is set in the city of water deep you would expect at least a few story elements. Unfortunately this games has no story and the theming is so minimal you don’t even feel it. The game lacks all the pieces that makes a game feel alive and immersive. All the locations on the board basically function the same way which takes away from the feeling of diversity and change that we associate with cities. When I first played this game I felt lied to because I was expecting a brilliant theme and all these dungeons and dragons references and i was disappointed by the complete absence of those things. A lot of the resources have been disguised to look like they are related to dungeons and dragon since they are called rogues, mercenaries and wizards but they all function the exact same. The story and the theme of this game is incredibly disappointing.
Is lords of water deep good?
The short answer for this question is maybe. The game does not follow through on what it is promising but what it does follow through on it does very well. Given everything the game is quite good but it lacks a lot of important aspects that I consider essential like story. It does execute other elements very well. It has a a very satisfying worker placement mechanic and the cards led to a lot of player interaction which is something I look for in a board game.
Should you buy lords of water deep?
The answer to this question is quite ambiguous and depends on what your expectations of the game are. If you are expecting the game to feel like dnd you will be heavily disapointed the theming is terrible there is absolutely no story and the fact that the game is set in a dnd setting means absolutely nothing so if what i have just said apply’s to you then don’t buy it. If you a looking for a lighter euro game with some satisfying mechanics, maybe you are trying to get somebody into the hobby or you are new to the hobby then this is a perfect game for you.
Final rating
6/10
This game is good but is very outdated and as someone who has been in the hobby for a long time now I struggle to enjoy the game for what it is.
